The phone call
I hate it when my calls do not get answered.
I was busy yakking away during lunch today.
When I received a call from my 1st aunt.
Was surprised to see her calling me.
Nevertheless I answered.
And that sparked off a huge chain of events.
The phonecall..
Aunt: You know where your mum is?
Me: Huh? how'd I know? I was working.
Aunt: I tried calling her, but can't get her.
Me: (already a little annoyed) No, she probably is not home and didn't bring her phone out
Aunt: hmm.. but she said she was going to see a doctor, and we ALL tried to call her.
Me: (detecting some panic in her voice) so?
Aunt: WE ARE AFRAID SHE MIGHT HAVE FAINTED ON THE WAY TO THE DOC. SHE HAS VERY HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (I swear she sounded on the verge of tears)
Me: huh.. I don't think so la..........
Aunt: You got your dad's number? Can you call your mum? I will call your dad. Your other AUNTS are calling your mum.
Me: ok.
I let the conversation sink in for awhile before I tried calling mum AND dad.
I couldn't get BOTH.
Dad I could understand, cos he worked somewhere underground.
My instincts told me Mum left her phone home and she just went out to the market and see the doc for checkup.
She does that sometimes, leaving her phone at home accidentally, beacause she forgot about it.
So I tried my darnest to ignore my aunt's really frantic tone.
What it could have been:-
Knowing my first aunt, she must be frantically calling all my aunts to mobilise them into the Operation Find-my-mum.
2nd Aunt was busy calling my house, my mum's hp nonstop, whilst my 1st aunt called all the children, that is, me, bro and sis (not that sis has a phone), at the same time, 1st aunt would call 3rd aunt and my dad, to make them panic as well (unnecessarily). After about an hour, 1st aunt gets really panicky and calls The Police to report that mum is loss, and that spark a nationwide search for mum, ala the Huang Na saga.
Only to find mum on a bus travelling home, with her hp left at home...
What really happened:-
My first aunt did frantically call all my aunts. My 3rd aunt who lives in Hougang so nearly made the trip down to my house to knock on my door to check out if mum fainted at home. My 1st aunt did call my dad (and so did I). And we all tried to frantically call mum. ..
All because before mum left the house, she told 1st aunt that a doctor told her yesterday that she has very high blood pressure and needs to go for a followup today, and also that she conveniently left her phone at home.
What freaked me out:-
I hate it when I call repeatedly and nobody picks up. I would have gladly trust my instincts and believe that mum left her phone at home. But the panic in 1st aunt's voice gnawed into me.
I panicked, but tried my darnest to stay calm. LBB seemed more panicky them me, and asked if I was going to take leave to find my mum.
Initially I laughed it off, and told him that mum probably left her phone at home and went out. (I am her daughter, I know my mummy alright)..
But as time ticked by, and there was no news whatsoever from anybody.
I panicked with them.
I panicked further when I called all my aunts (and dad) and none of them picked up their phone.
Darn it.
At this point in time, imagination got the better of me.
And once again, the following scenarios
Scenario One:
Mum fainted at home.
Scenario Two:
Mum fainted outside in some secluded area
Scenario Three:
Mum lost her phone
Scenario Four:
Mum found out at the doc's that she has some terminal illness of some kind and is too distraught to answer calls.
** I remember when my 1st aunt found out she has breast cancer, she literally broke down and cry and was truly too distraught to speak to anyone
Scenario Five:
Mum's high blood pressure is so bad, she has to be warded into the hospital
Scenario Six:
Mum got into some accident.
You get my point.
And once again, (two days in a row) my repeated calls were unanswered.
I almost burst out crying dialing the number over and over again.
And finally, mum returned my call.
Sounding all so chirpy and bewildered.
BAHhhhhh..
The next time 1st aunt calls,
I am not going to pick it up.
